Part of what makes Apichatpong’s critique so biting in Cemetery of Splendour is that he takes the gorgeous coloring of imagery in the hospital ward and extends it throughout the entirety of globalized Thai society, stretching the aesthetic as a refreshing fan in the hospital to a complete non-entity in the face of poverty, white tourist weddings (EU Wedding Photography, eh?), making it a simple covering or pleasure to find that makes 0 difference to anyone suffering from hardcore societal ills…
